For example it could be something as simple as your favorite coffee (with sugar or creme), or it could be an alcoholic mixed drink concoction that you have created. Your potion could also be an actual potion, oil, salve, or something else that you use as well.'

Nothing keeps me warmer than a good cup of English Breakfast Tea.

Recipe:
1 English Breakfast Teabag (made the traditional way with tea from Scotland but called English cause the English love to drink it)
1 autodrip coffee maker
1 pot of water

1) Put tea bag in empty mug.
2) Take out teabag put in husband’s old coffee mug from night before he left on counter and rinse quickly
3) Put tea bag in your own empty mug
4) Pour pot of water into Auto drip coffee maker and run through
5) Pour out pot of water you just heated, empty grounds left in coffee maker from last brew, rinse pot, fill with fresh water and run through again.
6) Pour water into mug with teabag and let steep 3-5 min.
7) Sip and enjoy.

Total possible points for this section is 20 points

What I did this weekend? Well, not much really out of the ordinary. Except for working on my son's graduation present. No photos yet but I've charted an afghan that has his school initials, their motto and the year at the bottom. It's 155 stitches wide and 160 rows long. The background is white, school initials and year done in grey. Motto is royal blue. I'm using the extended single crochet through out and once finished, making another hopefully for his roommate/friend as well. Managed to complete about half of it over the weekend.

Welcome to Transfiguration! Your assignment for this week will be all about turning one object into something else. :) It is simple enough to understand how the assignment works, though will require a bit of creativity (which shouldn't be too hard for this student body, I'm sure!). In the list below, you will find items from the Harry Potter world. Your job will be to create your own version of these items. (Don't worry if they don't look exactly like they do in the movies or on other places on the Web!) Start with posting your originality marker, and then the items you use to create the object before (w/your marker) and then the picture of after you construct it (again, w/your marker). For example, say that the item on the list is a Fanged Frisbee. Your first picture would be the items you use to construct it. (i.e., paper plates and a piece of paper), the second picture will be after the spell is cast (i.e., the paper plate attached to the fangs I drew, cut out, and taped to the paper plates). It can be as simple or elaborate as you want, just try to make it look like the item, and not something that is a drawn picture or two pieces of paper pasted together, where it takes more imagination to see the end result. ;) Scale size does not matter (it can be life-size or the right size for a doll), and yes, items you knit or crochet are completely eligible! HSKS 10 - Assignment 1 - Favorite Character(s)

The first assignment for this term at Hogwarts will be to take your three characters that you chose and write a little bit on why you chose those characters, why you love those characters so much.
Did you choose the character because you could see a PERFECT kit? What would be in that kit?

Did you choose the character because you love they're descriptions?

Did you choose this character because of personality traits? Do you love the straightforwardness of the character, the bravery of that character, the haughtiness of that character, the hot-headedness of that character?

Do you identify with that character? Why or How?

It's no contest who my favorite HP Character has become. Molly Weasley.

I think the first clue might be the over forty Molly sweaters I've crocheted over the past four years? Maybe the fact she's the only character in HP I've cosplayed at various conferences?

There are so many things about Molly that are a part of me. Obviously the crafting for one. The red hair (yes I'm a natural born redhead). The love of family though I only have three children (adults all now) and the ability to make do and be happy with what she has.

I'm a pastor's wife. Ever notice that pastor preacher and poor all begin with the same letter? Ok let me make one thing clear. Poor only refers to financially. We make ends meet and we get things covered somehow but when it comes to love and the important things in life? Not at all poor. Much like Molly.

Mess with her family and forget it. You don't mess with my children or my husband. Don't even try. AK would be too merciful.

My second choice was Minerva McGonagall and I that was because of her scottish heritage (I'm Clan Cameron married into Clan Cochran) and the teaching (having worked as a substitute for several year). I also totally love her no nonsense attitude yet her ability to work outside the box when necessary (recruiting Harry as seeker). Her strong determination and loyalty are qualities I hope I possess.

Finally, I also selected Arthur Weasley because he and Molly as a couple are perfect together and I love his fascination with batteries and rubber ducks and all things muggle!

It is not clear when humans realized what the solstice was and when it occurred. The Neolithic grave at Newgrange in Ireland, built c. 3200 BC (thus predating Stonehenge 3 I, dated to c. 2600 BC) is a solstice timekeeper: at dawn on the day of the Winter Solstice, the sunlight enters the central chamber through a special opening. It must have been a day of significant rituals.

With all that said, I have to say that considering the head of Vlad Dracula was supposed to have been sent to Constantinople and the first Christmas was a group of strangers (wise men) showing up to visit a recently born baby (Jesus) in Bethlehem.

The largest city that would be good for stocking up on garlic and crucifixes would be Rome, Italy. After all, we know how garlic is so very popular in Italian cooking and where else to find crucifixes and crosses but in the home of the Vatican City where there is also no shortage of holy water.

And with those on to Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains where one finds the homes of one Vlad Tepes aka Count Dracula. Bran Castle is one of his homes and the other is Castle Dracula located in the mountains above the small village of Sighisoara. One does not go out after sunset for vampire roam free in those mountains.

A beautifully knit red bag that was not only in the Wigtown Wanderer colors but one of my fav colors as well. Yarn, hook and patterns for a cowl set. A cute little Hufflepuff bookscarf and a Hufflepuff tape measure (Huzzah Hufflepuff :D). A dozen homemade cookies in a lovely tin (yeah yeah I know there's only 11 in the photo *grins*). A set of cards that are each a crochet block pattern, blood pops, a Hufflepuff sticker and cards! Thank you Celestina :)

1)First, I visited a capital city that was built On a lake, but the lake has since disappeared. Many ghosts meet in the ancient temples and all over the town.

Mexico City is located in the Valley of Mexico, also called the Valley of Anáhuac, a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,349 ft). The city was originally built as Tenochtitlan by the in 1325 on an island of Lake Texcoco

2) Next, I landed in a city where many kites are built & flown. Very windy place that! The city has old game courts which would have been useful for local Quidditch playoffs.

3) Then, lastly, I went to a beautiful Northeastern coastal city that is known for its annual multicultural carnival. Ravenclaws would have loved the pink library!

Now, young wizards and witches, it is time to learn the art of Apparition. You must practice very diligently, and when you have practiced, you must complete an assignment showing your ability to Disapparate and Apparate.
Here is your assignment:
Disapparate from Hogsmeade to a destination of your choice. Go somewhere you’ve always dreamed of going! While there, learn a new knit, crochet, spinning or weaving technique or pattern, or create your own pattern based on something that inspired you about the culture you visited. Apparate back to Hogsmeade and spend your class time reproducing the technique or pattern or culturally-inspired project.

Once your project is complete, write a short explanation of where you went and what inspired your project.
The project is worth 10 points, the write-up is worth an additional 10 points. To earn the full ten points, your project must use approx. 200 yards of yarn (about one to one and a half typical skeins). Smaller projects will earn proportionally fewer points, and excessively larger projects may earn more. You may do as many projects as you like, but each must be a different technique or from a different culture.

Having just returned from my trip, I would love to share a bit about my adventures in Transylvania. Yes, it really exists for any who doubted actually a section of Romania. Transylvania's best known resident is one Vladimir Tepes aka Vlad the Impaler or perhaps you know him best as Count Dracula! The original vampire who's biography was written by Bram Stoker.

While there, I managed to visit his former homes, Bran Castle - the most famous one and also the home where it is believed he was born, Casa Vlad Dracul in the town of Sighisoara.

While I did not have the chance to meet Count Vlad, I did prepare in case such a meeting would arise, based on the advice of the locals and crocheted a neck cowl in the Count's colors of black and red to keep my neck warm in the Romanian chill, safe from the odd Vampire attacks and to honor the count with his favorite colors.

So- it is my privilege to take over for him as the History of Magic professor. As such- I will focus on the APPLIED approach, as to not bore my students into a snoring stupor. :D

APPLIED History of Magic Syllabus

As I KNOW I’m not the only teacher giving homework- I have decided to approach HoM as a gradual course.

Each term, we will study ONE topic in depth. Students will have two projects (and one optional extra credit projects) to complete. Since Quidditch is so popular- the first term will be devoted to this popular subject.

Due dates and points:

The second project is due by the end of class. It will be worth 15 points.

SHOULD you not be able to complete the projects by the end of class- you may complete them and turn them in before the end of the TERM for reduced points.

Halloween, derived from Samhain, is the time of year when the veil between two worlds is the thinnest. In my history, was my godmother/aunt, Ita Marie Breslin, who crocheted ever since I can remember. She never used patterns, she just saw in her mind what she wanted and set to work. The gold hat is one she made for my mother years ago. Wednesday, 7 October 2009, 'Aunt' Ita crossed over to the otherside of the veil.

In the past couple of nights since learning this, I sat down and reconstructed the hat as a tribute to her ability, crafting and love.

So I present Breslin's Beret orginally designed by Ita M. Breslin in the 70's. Pattern available here

Triwizard Challenge - Second Task

Task Two
Last time we focused on doing something for someone we loved. The other part of the original task was to swim to the bottom of the lake. This time around, we will focus on the lake itself. Make things that remind us of the lake in some way: things that are the color of the lake; things that have wave patterns in them; or things you can use in or near a lake (swimsuits, coverups, etc)

This month we delve into “Cross-Species transfiguration”. The most well-known is the Animagus spell, but there are many other types as well! You must show an ability to Transfigure an object from one species into another. This can be demonstrated by:

Form: Fox
Genera and species: Vulpes vulpes
Collective Term: A skulk of foxes
Distinguishing marks: Red fur, green eyes
Animal Characteristics:
Appealing and cerebral and of average size, the fox is a close relative of both the wolf and dog personalities and displays typical canine qualities of loyalty, passion and creativity. Largely misunderstood to be a shy, retreating individual, it's the fox's unique stature as a small carnivore that defines its survival strategy. Because it cannot succeed in the world using brute force alone, it must rely on its sharp mind and engaging personality to garner resources, and it consequently spends a lot of time in its head -- giving the impression that it's trying to outsmart its friends. My swap package from up spoiler came in the Reducio swap this week and without further ado, I'm showing off my fabulous package!!!!!!!!!! Our theme was the Hogwarts Express.

There was a darling little hufflepuff sock as well as a miniature train keyring for the Hogwarts Express. a prefect badge that is going on my tote bag and a Hufflepuff bookmark. The chocolate frog from the cart was delicious and just like Harry, I got an Albus Dumbledore card *squees*. There's a tiny little Hedwig in his own little cage and he even comes out of the cage for sending my own owls out. She also found grapefruit gum which is one of my favorite flavors!

The Signs which Will hunts down in the book take the form of quartered circles, one each made of wood, bronze, iron, water (an opalescent stone), fire (gold), and plain stone. Craft something inspired by one of the Six Great Signs of the Light. A literal interpretation (a quartered circle), something decorated with that motif, spun fiber inspired by the materials used to make one of the signs, or whatever else your imagination may present.

Aguamenti - The Water Charm

Aguamenti is the charm used to put out fires/ create water to drink. It is first named in Half-Blood Prince, when Harry is being taught how to perform this specific charm in Professor Flitwick’s class. Later Harry casts this spell in an attempt to create water for Dumbledore to drink after taking Voldemort’s potion and then to douse Hagrid’s hut after it is set on fire later.

So your task is to either

a) create something water related, be it colours, waves etc.
or
b) create something a little more literal like a goblet, something that imitates the jets of water or a fire hose (firemen optional but welcome and yes the professor knows where some minds will take this one and that is also fine :D)

The Third Task - The Maze

In the third task, the Champions had to enter a maze of hedges which was filled with dangerous obstacles. Some of the dangers in the maze included a Blast-Ended Skrewt, a giant spider, and anti-gravity mist.

A second option for this Task would be to use a project requiring the deciphering of a chart and color changes….this could be a good choice for those who crochet!

The Second Task - The Lake

The second task,required the Champions to rescue people who were dear to them from the settlement of the merpeople in the lake.

I thought long and hard on this Task…

The inspiration for this task comes from this statement…

Harry’s decent showing and ethical behaviour in this Challenge lead the other Champions to believe that Harry is, in fact, a worthy contender. Harry’s choosing to try and save the other hostages earned him extra points from the judges for “moral fiber.”

In this Task you are charged with showing the ”Moral Fiber” that Harry did! You are charged to knit/crochet something for someone who needs help or support or just a reminder that she/he is not alone in the world. Charity possibilities can be anything! You can even make something for that friend who is down in the dumps or that special someone who needs remembered during the Holidays ahead.

My friend has begun walking with her husband each morning for their health. Right now, she is also dealing with their adult daughter needing surgery and having to help with their grandson during her recovery. I made her this cowl for when the winter months come and the cold would try to keep her from walking

“Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned.”

Jumping right into the fall term with both feet, we will begin by attempting some of the most mystical and mysterious Transfigurations there are. This, students, is the process of blocking.

Blocking is a form of alchemical Transfiguration, that takes your knitting and crocheted items from mundane to ethereal.

Your assignment this month is to knit or crochet an item, and then Transfigure it, through blocking, into a work of art. Lace is always a good bet for a nice block, but really anything can be blocked - hats, socks, baby booties, sweaters, etc. The requirements are thus:

~You MUST post pre- and post-blocking photos of your item. Photos during the blocking process will earn you bonus points, as will House colors and large items, as always, and the professor’s whim.

~The item must LOOK significantly different after being blocked - stitches must be smoother, item must have a better shape, something like that.

The first task, was designed to test courage and daring. To Conquer your Dragon!

For the Ravelry TriWizards Tournament, your First task will also charge you to conquer your Dragon! Complete a UFO or WIP by the due date of September 28th. We all know that some UFO’s are Dragons and we must conquer them!

If you do not have a UFO/WIP then you are charged to destash and de-queue…Conquer your queue Slay that Stash…complete a project that you have longed to do but havent casted on yet!!! This can be any project that you already have the supplies and pattern for…it doesnt have to be one you have in your queue on Ravelry, but you must already have all the supplies and ready to cast on.

Divinations assignments

I began with a cup of Ginger Snap Tea and found the following in my cup:

A stalk - person, female (length shorter than other stalks in the blend)
A boat - visit from a friend, safe refuge
A crescent - a journey

Having a female friend who lives in another town, I am h oping we can spend some time together before she moves and it seems according to this, we will as it seems a journey to her town is in the future. Knowing she is moving to a cooler climate than where she is now, I thought a nice lacy hat would be a good gift when I see her. Feeling that the leaves led to this pattern which employed v-stitches and shell stitches to achieve a lace effect. However, it seemed not quite right. Something was missing.

Perhaps an aura reading was in order. Doing so, I found a picot edging would add a nice finishing touch to the cap.

Yet still something was missing... pulling out my trusty crystal ball, I spent time focusing and gazing, trying to find the missing piece to make the cap just right.

Bobbles! Yes, definitely bobbles and so I added approximately 2" of bobble rows. Each row is an alternated stitch of bobble and single crochet.

Topped with that picot edging.

While I enjoy wearing sleeveless tops or dresses during the summer, fans and airconditioning can cause me to feel rather chilled when I am inside. Also, when riding in a muggle friend's auto, their air conditioning blows directly on my arms which causes discomfort and chills (thank Merlin we have climate spells to control room temperatures!)

White Chocolate Billywig Pie

Ingredients:

3oz box Berry Blue Jello gelatin (or any gelatin flavor that will give you blue color)
1 1/2 cup boiling water
8 oz container frozen non dairy topping (I used fat free)
1 oz package White Chocolate instant pudding (I used sugar free)
1 pint blueberries
1 graham cracker crumb pie crust

Directions:

In large bowl, add boiling water to gelatin and stir for two minutes until dissolved. Using wire whisk, stir in frozen whipped topping and instant pudding until well mixed. Place in frig for 1 hour to firm.

Remove from frig and stir in 1/2 pint of blueberries. Reserve rest for topping. Pour mixture into pie crust and refrigerate till firm.

Top with remaining blueberries.

Serves 8

NAIME Arithmancy Mini Challenge

Assignment:

August 14-22 Arithmancy is the study of numbers, how they interrelate and the patterns created by specific sequences. Often one thinks of large complex charts when the subject is approached, however, with this mini challenge we will focus on one the simple aspects. We will only be changing one variable and compare the results. For this practical challenge we will be ::gasp:: swatching. Using the same yarn & stitch pattern & only changing the size needles used, make at least two 4x4inch swatches. Each set MUST have at least 2 swatches in the same yarn, same pattern, but using different sized needles/hooks. (Larger swatches may be made, 4x4 is the minimum size accepted.) When turning in your challenge pieces, please include information on yarn, needle sizes used, stitch pattern, the stitches per inch obtained, and Rows per inch. (The usual information you should note when swatching!)

Pattern:
Row 1: SC in each chain across, ch 1 turn.
Row 2: Sc in first stitch, Treble crochet in next. Continue alternating across in each stitch. ch 1 turn.
Row 3: 1 sc in each stitch across, ch 1 turn.

Billywig Cabin won again! Yay!

Game 7 was Follow the Patronus and the leader

followed her patronus to various locations and found various bits of written things left behind by people that were active in the end of Voldemort’s reign and life. I will be sharing those clues with you today/tonight, starting here. ....Follow that clue to a distant relative of the author of the clue to find the next one. Please remember, though, that it will likely take about 5 minutes to hike to the next location of the following clue! And I will say again, when you find the last clue to take you to the chat room to wait for everyone else to join us, sign in with your Potter name! If you do not, your cabin will not get the credit!

The clues were small snippets of dialogue and we had to determine from the snippet who wrote it. Then from that, figure out who is related to that author (according to shared name) and check their blog for the next clue.

Assignment:

We will be learning about merpeople.

As some of you know, these magical, mysterious creatures refused the “Being” status in favor of “Beast” for they would not be in the same classification as Hags and Vampires (and who could blame them?).

Merpeople live underwater but can breathe above for a period of time. They talk Mermish, which can be spoken by very few wizards. They also love music and keep Grindylows as pets.

Sirens, selkies and Merrows are all considered merpeople. Sirens are the most commonly known, even among muggles. That is because they are very pleasing to the eye.
